Praying Our Way Forward

Bishop Bruce R. Ough invites all Minnesota United Methodists to join him in Praying our Way Forward. The denominational Praying Our Way Forward initiative launched on New Year’s Day 2017 with 75 weeks of focused prayer for The United Methodist Church. Each annual conference will spend one week in intentional prayer for the mission of The United Methodist Church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world and for the work of the Commission on a Way Forward. The effort began in the North Carolina Conference, and will wrap up in the West Angola Episcopal Area in June 2018. The Minnesota Conference's week of prayer will be Nov. 5-11, 2017.

The Commission on a Way Forward was proposed by the Council of Bishops and approved by the 2016 General Conference. It is tasked with working to address the denomination’s differences regarding human sexuality—more specifically, the commission was asked to do a complete examination of and possibly revise the Book of Discipline paragraphs concerning human sexuality, and explore maintaining and strengthening the unity of the church.

Three ways to participate

While this Commission continues its work, the Council of Bishops is calling on all United Methodists to join together in prayer. Each conference is registered for a week of prayer. The Minnesota Conference has been assigned the week of Nov. 5-11, 2017. Here are three ways that you can participate:

  • Sign up online for one or more half-hour time slots when you commit to praying. Both churches and individuals can sign up; consider hosting a prayer vigil at your church at some point throughout the week.
  • Submit a prayer to be shared on the conference website and via social media during our designated week. Prayer prompts will be shared throughout the week to encourage people to take a break from what they are doing and pray.
  • Pray for members of the Commission on a Way Forward by name:
